Requirements to be a model

Feb 01, 12 Requirements to be a model

When considering what are the requirements to be a model, first you have to decide what type of modeling you want to get into. We will go into these areas in more detail on different pages, but here is an overview.

When someone says they want to be a model, the first thing most people think of is a high fashion model. Very, very few people ever make it as a high fashion model because the requirements to be a model in this field are both strict and do not reflect the vast majority of female body types.

So, if you’re wondering “can I become a model?” in high fashion, firstly you will need to be between 5’9″ and 5’11″ in height, between 108 and 130 lbs relative to your height and with ideal stats of 34B-24-34. Obviously, looks are also important but the type of look that fashion houses seek changes from year to year.

You will also need to be hard working and cope well under pressure. The world of fashion can be vicious and a well-developed thick skin is vital to deal with the amount of knock-backs successful models endure early on in their careers.

But high fashion modeling is only one small part of the entire modeling industry, so have a look on the other pages to see what other areas may suit you. But following are some things that models of all types need to be successful:

What do you need to be a model?

  • Photogenic: this doesn’t necessarily mean “pretty”, but you have to photograph well and you must know how to present your body in its best light.
  • Good with people: people won’t book you if you’re hard to work with (don’t think that the diva supermodels were like that at the beginning of their careers).
  • Drive: think to yourself “why do I want to become a model?”. If it’s just because you can’t think of anything else to do, you won’t be successful. Passion and drive are essential when setting the alarm clock at 4 am for an early shoot.
  • A good agent: they know the industry inside out and the right people to get your career going.

Tips from the modeling stars

“I never really thought about being an actress or being anything like that. I was always a bit scared as well because of the thing about models becoming an actress and all that.”
Gisele Bundchen

“Models now need to promote themselves, think like businesswomen and diversify their careers by doing other things. Chances are very slim that a mere model will become a household name today.”
Tyra Banks

“Fashion is entertainment. That’s why these top models are so fascinating to kids. They’re dying to know about Naomi and Christy, or whoever we’ve declared the new one this afternoon.”
Carrie Donovan
